The Philosophy of Being a Meaningful CEO to Help the Society

What will it be when someone becomes successful and famous? Spend all of the money to enjoy  life? To be proud and look down on others? No one will think that one will be happy when someone’s life is lived only for money and fame. It is true that it will be meaningful to help society when someone becomes a CEO of a company. To help the one who need helps will feel lots of joyful and fulfillment.  “With great power comes great responsibility.”(Stan Lee). CEO does not only work for money, but also has the responsibility to improve our society. Don’t be a slave of money, try to become meaningful to the world, such as doing charity or help the society.

Warren Buffet is a CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and the 3rd richest person in the whole world in 2010. Buffet usually donates 99 percent of his wealth to charity and foundations, especially the Gates Foundation. Buffet is urging and advising all billionaires to donate all or some of their wealth. Buffetsaid, “Money, to some extent, sometimes lets you be in more interesting environments. But it can’t change how many people love you or how healthy you are.”(Lowe 24). It is true that money can almost buy everything, but it still can’t buy your health and relationships. Buffet also said, “I want to give my kids enough so that they could feel that they could do anything, but not so much that they could do nothing.’’(An Exclusive Hour with Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates. Charlie Rose). Buffet enjoys doing charity, donate his fortune to foundations and help society. Buffet is not only a billionaire, but also a meaningful CEO to the society. Buffet is a good teacher for others to learn from .

Terry Gou is the chairman of the Foxconn International Holdings Ltd. He is also the founder of

Yonglin Foundation and he is the richest person inTaiwan. Terry Gou usually donates 1/3 of his

Sean 2

wealth to help society, such as education and help the country which suffered from the natural disasters. Gou claimed that he will pass the things what he believes, not the material things he possesses, especially to his children. Although he is a strict boss in the company; he is also a kind father in his family. During work time Gou might be a lion, but when he is with his family, he is just like a kind father who is full of love. The different styles of his personality is a way that people can learn from him. Gou’s philosophy in life is to enjoy his work and challenges. The plan of Gou’s life is when he is 25 to 45 years old, he will work for money; when he is 45 to 65 years old, he will work for a dream; after 65 years old, he will work for the things he likes. Enjoy the work and working toward the dream. Gou also loves to do charity. Gou is no doubt a societal contributor in the whole world.

To compare Buffet and Gou is an important thing. They are both rich men and they are also in the top position of their companies. They are also both philanthropists. They enjoy their work and  love to help society. They all have foundations and a warm family. They both aren’t working for money and won’t be the slaves of money. It doesn’t mean that just because they are the top CEO they will just be proud of themselves. They still keep working to help lots of people and society. They both have their own beliefs and philosophy of their lives. Although their styles of being a leader are not the same, they are still a successful and meaningful CEO, which also help to improve society.

Carlos Slim is the CEO and chairman of the Telmex, Slim is also a philanthropist and the richest person in the world. Slim has a different kind of thinking about fortune. Slim said, “Charity doesn’t solve poverty. How much charity has been done in the past years, trillions of dollars.” (Bahree, Megha. 29 Oct. 2010 <http://blogs.forbes.com/meghabahree/2010/10/29/carlos-slim-disses-gates-and-buffetts-pledges-to-give-away-their-billions/>). Slim also said that, “It’s more important to put all your resources and your experience to work. Many of the problems will be solved by business activity and

development.” (Bahree, Megha. 29 Oct. 2010 <http://blogs.forbes.com/meghabahree/2010/10/29/ carlos-slim-disses-gates-and-buffetts-pledges-to-give-away-their-billions/>). It is true that charity can’t

Sean 3

solve the problems of poverty. Although charity donates lots of money to the needy, since they spend all of the money, they will be needy again. As the saying goes, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. ” (Lao Tzu). Give a man a lunch box, only feed him for one meal and then he will be hungry again; teach him how to work instead of just give him a lunch box, he can finally work for himself and not just for one meal, but for his own life. Slim believes that only employment can solve the poverty.

Carlos Slim said, “That’s my challenge in my life, to help change my country.” (Bahree, Megha. 29 Oct. 2010 <http://blogs.forbes.com/meghabahree/2010/10/29/carlos-slim-disses-gates-and-buffetts-pledges-to-give-away-their-billions/>). Although Slim is already the richest person in the world, Slim still wants to challenge himself, that is to change his country. Slim established the Telmex Foundation, which is a philanthropic organization to help the Mexican society, such as sports, education, health, nutrition, justice and human development. Also, the Telmex Foundation serve to solve the big problems of national society and contribute to help the country which suffered from the natural disasters. Slim is a meaningful CEO to the society, he does not just work for money, but also work for the things he believes in. Slim is not only the richest person in the world, but also a meaningful CEO to the society.

Mukesh Ambani is the managing director & chairman of the Reliance Industries. Mukesh Ambani lives in the world’s most expensive home called Antilia. Antilia has twenty-seven floors, which includes a parking space for 168 cars and 9 elevators in the lobby etc. Ambani’s extraordinary attitude toward management is the way of his successes. Mukesh Ambani said, “We need not feel embarrassed to advocate economic nationalism.” (Nair, Mahesh. n.d.<http://www.rediff.com/business/1998/jan/ 05mahesh.htm>). Mukesh Ambani also said, “Our government functionaries also must not feel shy to work closely with business. Jointly they should ensure thatIndia's economic interests are protected –

through trade, investment, and foreign policy measures.” (Nair, Mahesh. n.d.<http://www.rediff.com/ business/1998/jan/05mahesh.htm>). The open mindedness and courage of Mukesh Ambani are the

Sean 4

good teachers for everyone.

“Mukesh Ambani believes in his father, Shri Dhirubhai Ambani’s philosophy – Business has to have a purpose.” (Mukesh Dhirubhai Ambani owner of Reliance Industries (RIL) on his father's philosophy). Mukesh Ambani believes and accepts his father’s philosophy, he also does it very well. Mukesh Ambani’s wife Nita Ambani said, “Charity begins at home.” (Sir Thomas Browne, 1642). That is why they live in such an expensive home. If someone can’t take care of his family, how come he can do charity to help others? The original way is the most important thing of all. On charity, Mukesh Ambani said, “Serious giving is important. Circumstances inIndiaare different but at an individual level I can relate to it.” (the NDTV Profit Business awards 2010). Mukesh Ambani does charity as a part of Reliance Corporate Social Responsibility. Ambani established the Reliance Foundation, which is contributing to the social development of India, specifically quality, develop a world class university, high-quality health care which is affordable, urban renewal and rural development, and to promote and protect the India's priceless heritage of arts and culture. The Reliance Foundation also help and assist the country during natural disasters. In business, Ambani uses various kinds of strategy to deal with different situations. Also Ambani’s attitude are open minded and brave to try any kinds of method, whether it is tradition or not. There must be a purpose for the business, be also able to take care of one’s family. That’s how Mukesh Ambani succeeded.

Carlos Slim and Mukesh Ambani are totally different types of leader. They both are the richest people for sure. Carlos Slim doesn’t believe that charity can solve poverty. Mukesh Ambani believes that charity begins at home. Carlos Slim wants to help the country he lives in, Mukesh Ambani lives in the world’s most expensive home. How ironic! No matter how different they are, now they are both the richest person and important person in the world. Especially, in 2014 Mukesh Ambani will become

richer than Carlos Slim. Of course, they will both face various kinds of challenges, they can both be

meaningful to society. Carlos Slim will try to teach people how to work and share his resources rather

Sean 5

than donate money. Mukesh Ambani will establish a new age world-class university inIndia, the

university will promote education and research in science and technology to liberal arts. They both do their best between work and family. No doubt that they can both be the winner in their lives. It is so impressive to learn from their philosophy of living.

Warren Buffet, Terry Gou, Carlos Slim and Mukesh Ambani, are all successful in their businesses. They also have various types of philosophies. No matter how different they are, the same view between them is they enjoy their work and lives. Warren Buffet and Terry Gou enjoy doing charity; Carlos Slim loves his country, he tries his best to challenge and help his home country; Mukesh Ambani loves his family, he believes charity begins at home. He enjoys the works and challenges, also share loves to the society and enjoy helping others. Don’t be afraid to make decisions, try to challenge and face the problem. They both teach the view and question the philosophy of our lives. To be meaningful to the society rather than work for money and fame. Don’t be a selfish and greedy person, remember the love of family and the society. There are lots of people who need our helps, why not enjoy helping them!

Just like the story of the four people, I realize that it is not an easy work to be a CEO. The philosophy and purpose are the most important things that I must figure out by myself. Being a CEO is the dream of my life. It is not because of fame or fortune, but because to help my home country! “With great power comes great responsibility.”(Stan Lee). CEO does not only work for money, but also has the responsibility to improve our society. The philosophy of my life from now on is to become a meaningful CEO to help the society. To help my home country Taiwanis the biggest challenge of my life. I will try my best to study leadership and management in the USA. I hope I can find the answer that I am chasing for a long time. I will keep learning and won’t give up. There still have lots of people waiting for me. My parents, my teachers, my friends and my country, they are all waiting for me. The challenge of my life is just begin. Let us enjoy the works, the challenges and our lives!
