It will now be freer to court high-profile sellers more aggressively—and also to invest in selling more lower-priced pieces, which in the topsy-turvy art world offer higher margins than the big-ticket lots auction houses fight over. Boosting online auctions would help here. So would more private sales—where Sotheby’s acts as a broker and which have grown fast, reaching $1 billion last year. Alex Maroccia of Berenberg, a bank, says it may spend more on r&d. Last year it bought Thread Genius, an artificial-intelligence startup that identifies artworks and can recommend similar items to losing bidders.
Buyers and sellers of all but the priciest pieces may rue the increased opacity of the houses’ already baffling commissions. But one group (besides Sotheby’s investors) will rejoice. Some of Mr Drahi’s fellow plutocrats make a killing from financing the guarantees that auction houses offer. For them, the more art that goes under the hammer, the better.

Waterproof Wings
The wings of butterflies don't just help the insects fly. They also repel water. The wings do it so well, in fact, that an international team of engineers now sees them as models for how future airplanes could be made. Moisture makes flight less efficient.
Ice is even more of a drag. A butterfIy's wings, with their intricate ridges and waxy covering, can buck a water droplet 40 percent faster than the famously hydrophobic lotus leaf.
Every millisecond is important. “If we can reduce the contact time with water, a surface can stay dry Ionger,” says MIT's Kripa Varanasi. That would mean faster flights and less need to spray de-icing chemicals, which in 2013 delayed thousands of U.S. flights. If the idea takes wing, it won't be the first time humans have taken a page from nature's efficient playbook. -Daniel Stone
